Vision loss reversed with the help of eye implant and smart glasses

A new eye implant paired with smart glasses has helped dozens of patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) regain some central vision. In a yearlong clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 26 of 32 participants (aged 60+) showed improved sight — enough to read and solve crosswords again.

The 2×2 mm implant, made of photovoltaic panels, sits under the retina and receives near-infrared signals from camera-equipped glasses, which stimulate the optic nerve. Though vision remains blurry and black-and-white, experts call the results “amazing.”

The technology was developed by Science Corporation, founded by Neuralink cofounder Max Hodak, after acquiring the implant from France’s Pixium Vision in 2024.
