Waymo is starting to add highway driving to its robotaxi service in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Early-access users will be the first to get freeway routes, which can make trips up to 50% faster. After extensive testing, Waymo says its autonomous system is now ready for the challenges of high-speed driving, with enhanced sensors, safety redundancies, and emergency protocols.
The company is also expanding Bay Area service south to San Jose, offering 24/7 curbside pickups at San Jose International Airport — its second airport after Phoenix. Highway capability and airport access are key steps as Waymo works to compete more directly with traditional ride-hailing services.
