Apple will refuse India’s order to preinstall a government app

Apple reportedly plans to reject an Indian government order requiring phone makers to preload the state-backed Sanchar Saathi cybersecurity app on all new and existing devices. Citing privacy and security concerns, Apple will quietly tell officials it doesn’t comply with such mandates but won’t take legal action.

The app, meant to track and block lost phones, has sparked surveillance worries — especially since the order would make it mandatory and non-removable. India’s communications minister claims the app is optional, contradicting the reported directive. iPhones account for only 9% of India’s smartphone market, with Samsung, Vivo, and Oppo also affected by the order.
