Google’s design guide reveals Android XR basics

Google is preparing for the launch of Android XR glasses, and newly spotted design documentation reveals how they will work and be controlled.

Two main types are planned: AI Glasses (with speakers, mic, and camera) and Display AI Glasses with a small screen, available in monocular (single display) and later binocular (dual display) versions.

All models will include core controls like a power button, touchpad and camera button, with display versions adding a dedicated display toggle. Users can take photos or videos with the camera button, launch Gemini via touchpad or voice, swipe to navigate and adjust volume with gestures.

The interface on display models includes a lock-screen-style Home view and pill-shaped notifications, while fixed LED indicators show device status for both the wearer and bystanders.

Google also advises developers to design simple, low-power visuals for see-through displays, minimizing bright colors and pixel use to save battery and reduce heat.
