Android and iPhone owners can now have secure messaging sessions

Google and Apple have started rolling out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS chats between Android and iPhone users, bringing secure cross-platform messaging for the first time.

Android users need the latest version of Google Messages, while iPhone users must be running iOS 26.5. The feature also depends on carrier support, with major US networks like AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon already included.

Encryption will be enabled automatically for both new and existing RCS chats and users will see a lock icon indicating that conversations are securely encrypted.
