At Google I/O 2026, Google announced major upgrades for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. One of the biggest additions is support for home screen widgets, allowing drivers to access weather, favorite contacts, garage door controls and more directly from the infotainment display while navigating.
Android Auto is also getting a new Material 3 Expressive design with updated fonts, animations and wallpapers, plus support for video apps like YouTube. Video playback will work while parked and can seamlessly switch to audio when driving resumes.
Google is also bringing Dolby Atmos support, upgraded media apps, and smarter Gemini Intelligence features to cars. New AI-powered tools like Magic Cue will help drivers respond to messages and find information using context from texts, emails, and calendars with a single tap.
Additional improvements include Google Maps’ new Immersive Navigation with live lane guidance powered by the car’s front-facing camera. The new features will roll out gradually throughout the year.
