US smartphone sales fall 5% as rising costs push prices higher

US smartphone sales declined 5% year over year in Q2 2026, according to Counterpoint Research, as rising component costs and higher energy prices put pressure on consumers.

The sub-$100 smartphone segment was hit especially hard, with sales plunging 64% year over year. Overall prepaid phone sales also fell 11%, while manufacturers and carriers increasingly shifted toward more expensive models.

The $200–$300 segment tripled its market share, helped by price increases on mid-range devices. Counterpoint expects smartphone average selling prices to continue rising, with Google’s Pixel 11 series already $100 more expensive than its predecessors. Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 lineup is also expected to follow the trend.
