Developing apps for Android Automotive has been challenging, leading to a limited selection on the Google Play Store for cars. However, this is set to improve as Google’s car-ready mobile apps program launches in February 2025. Announced at I/O last year, the program focuses on expanding app availability for cars running Android Automotive OS, starting with video, gaming and browser apps that meet Google’s quality and safety standards.
The program also introduces a compatibility mode for apps that aren’t fully optimized, ensuring safe usage by scaling visuals, adding system back affordances and disabling certain features while driving. Apps will only be available on certified cars with Google built-in, with plans to extend to Android Auto in the future.
The first eligible apps will include popular streaming services like AMC+, enhancing in-car experiences, especially when parked or charging. Google aims to expand the program to other app categories and certify more vehicles over time.
