New York City is suing major social media companies — including Meta, Google, Snapchat, and TikTok — accusing them of “gross negligence” and fueling a youth mental health crisis.
The 327-page lawsuit claims these platforms are deliberately designed to hook children using addictive algorithms that exploit their vulnerability for profit. NYC argues that companies knowingly built systems that harm kids’ well-being and public health.
Other states, such as Kentucky, Illinois, and Oregon, have joined similar lawsuits, but New York is now the largest plaintiff. Google responded, saying the claims misrepresent how YouTube works and that it offers safety tools like Supervised Experiences for families.
