OpenAI has paused AI-generated videos of Martin Luther King Jr. on its Sora platform after complaints from his estate and daughter, Bernice King, who called the deepfakes “disrespectful.”
The company said it will now allow representatives or estates of historical figures to opt out of having their likeness used in Sora. OpenAI stated that while free expression is important, families should have control over depictions of their loved ones.
The move follows a similar shift to an “opt-in” policy for copyrighted characters after earlier backlash, as OpenAI works to strengthen safeguards around likeness rights and ethical AI use.
