Google is developing a new “Min Mode” for Android 17 — an evolution of the Always-On Display (AOD) that lets apps show live, minimal interfaces even when the screen is off.
Unlike the regular AOD, Min Mode can display full-screen app content in a low-power state, allowing features like navigation, timers, or media info to stay visible without draining much battery. Apps will register a special “MinModeActivity” so Android can render them safely on the dimmed display, even shifting pixels to prevent burn-in.
Evidence suggests Google Maps will be the first to use it, offering a monochrome, battery-saving navigation mode that works while the phone is idle. The feature is currently disabled and is expected to launch with Android 17 in 2026.
