Amazon says its new Vega OS doesn’t replace Fire OS but expands its multi-OS strategy, enabling better performance on both low-end devices and advanced AI hardware. At the same time, Amazon is using Vega OS to crack down on piracy by blocking sideloading on the new Linux-based Fire TV Stick 4K Select, allowing installs only from the official Appstore.
This stricter approach is part of Amazon’s broader anti-piracy efforts with ACE, driven by the huge rise in illegal streaming — especially sports. Amazon plans to bring these protections to older devices as well, though shifting Android-based models to Linux may be difficult. Developers with verified accounts can still test apps, but users will have less freedom. The move also follows Amazon’s recent restrictions on Prime password sharing in an effort to reduce revenue losses from unauthorized sports viewing.
