Google wants to replace ChromeOS with new Android-based OS

Google is building a unified desktop platform called Aluminium OS, merging ChromeOS and Android into one system designed for laptops, tablets, detachables and mini-PCs. The goal is to bring Android to traditional PCs, compete better with Windows, macOS and the iPad, and use Google’s AI stack — including Gemini — at the core of the experience.

A new Google job listing confirms Aluminium OS as the project’s codename and shows that the platform will target all device tiers, including premium hardware, not just budget Chromebooks. It also outlines Google’s long-term plan to transition from ChromeOS to Aluminium, while maintaining ChromeOS support during the shift.

Google is already testing Aluminium OS on Android 16 builds with various chipsets. The unified OS is planned to launch in 2026, likely based on Android 17, though the final branding — ChromeOS, Android Desktop or something else — is still undecided.
