Apple’s AI chief John Giannandrea is stepping down as the company struggles to deliver its revamped, AI-powered Siri. Former Google and Microsoft executive Amar Subramanya will take over as Apple’s VP of AI, overseeing AI models, machine learning research and safety.
Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018 to improve Siri, reportedly lost CEO Tim Cook’s confidence after delays pushed the personalized Siri launch into 2025. He will stay on as an advisor before retiring in 2026.
Apple expects to release its upgraded Siri next spring, with some features rumored to use a custom version of Google’s Gemini model.
