Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued several major TV makers, accusing them of secretly collecting screen data via automated content recognition (ACR) for targeted advertising. A Texas judge has now issued a temporary restraining order against Samsung, forcing it to stop collecting, sharing, or using ACR data from users in the state. The order is in effect ahead of a January 9 hearing, where a longer-term injunction will be considered. The case applies only to Texas, and other TV brands are not affected. Samsung TV owners can disable ACR through the “Viewing Information Services” option in their TV’s privacy settings.
