Smartphone makers may soon be required to share source code with India’s government

India is proposing new smartphone security rules that could require manufacturers to submit proprietary source code for government review to identify OS-level vulnerabilities. The plan has faced strong pushback from major OEMs, who argue it’s incompatible with privacy and corporate secrecy. Other proposals include notifying authorities of major updates, more user privacy controls and allowing removal of most preinstalled apps. Consultations with manufacturers are expected, and it’s unclear when or if the rules will become law.
