Samsung´s S26 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max flashlights can melt plastic

Viral videos showing Samsung phones melting plastic with their flashlights are gaining traction again, with clips featuring devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE racking up views.

However, tests by Tom’s Guide using the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max found that both phones can melt thin plastic when the flashlight is set to maximum brightness – not just Samsung devices.

This happens because modern smartphones use powerful LED flash modules that generate significant heat when concentrated in one spot. Samsung already includes warnings for high brightness use, but the trend highlights a simple takeaway: avoid leaving your phone’s flashlight pressed against plastic or other materials for extended periods.
