The FCC wants to make it harder to buy burner phones

The FCC’s proposed anti-robocall rules are facing criticism from privacy advocates and survivor support groups, who warn they could unintentionally make it harder for vulnerable people to access phone services.

Organizations such as the National Network to End Domestic Violence argue that behaviors flagged as suspicious – such as changing phone numbers, creating new email accounts or using PO boxes – are often essential safety measures for people escaping abuse, stalking or harassment. Critics say stricter identity verification requirements could create barriers for legitimate users while doing little to stop scammers, who often rely on stolen identities and other sophisticated tactics.

The FCC is currently collecting public feedback on the proposal, with a final decision expected in the coming months. If adopted, the new rules could require consumers to provide more personal information when activating or renewing wireless service.
