Apple requested access to Samsung´s internal data

Apple has taken an unusual step in its US antitrust case by seeking internal data from rival Samsung. The company wants access to Samsung’s market research and business reports to help defend itself against claims by the Department of Justice that it limits competition through the iPhone and App Store.

At the center of the case is whether Apple makes it difficult for users to switch to Android. Apple denies this and argues that Samsung’s data could show how competitive the market really is and how often users switch platforms.

After failing to obtain the documents from Samsung’s US division, Apple is now using an international legal process to request the data from South Korea. However, even if the court approves, Samsung and Korean authorities could still refuse.

If successful, the data could become key evidence in determining whether Apple’s practices are anticompetitive or simply part of normal market competition.
