Google loses final appeal against €4.1 billion Android fine in Europe

Google has lost its final appeal against a €4.1 billion ($4.67 billion) antitrust fine imposed by the European Union over Android. The European Court of Justice, the EU’s highest court, upheld the penalty, bringing the long-running case to an end.

The case began in 2018 when the European Commission ruled that Google used Android’s dominant market position to favor its own services, including Google Search and Chrome, through agreements with smartphone manufacturers. The original €4.34 billion fine was reduced to €4.1 billion in 2022.

Google argued that Android promotes choice and innovation, but the court rejected its appeal. While the ruling is unlikely to lead to major changes for Android users, it marks the conclusion of one of the company’s biggest antitrust battles in Europe.
