GenAI-capable smartphones contributed 6% to global sales in Q1 2024, up from 1.3% in the previous quarter, as per Counterpoint’s Global Handset Model Sales Tracker. Premium smartphones (> $600) made up over 70% of these sales. The number of GenAI-capable models more than doubled from 16 to 30 in Q1. Samsung led this market, with its Galaxy S24 Ultra capturing over 30% market share. Chinese brands like Xiaomi and vivo also performed well, with China becoming the largest market for GenAI-capable phones. GenAI phones are expected to make up 11% of the market in 2024, driven by new use cases, consumer awareness, and affordable AI chipsets. Apple is anticipated to join this segment with its 2024 iPhone lineup. GenAI smartphones use large-scale AI models for advanced tasks and are expected to evolve with technology advancements.
