Apple’s ecosystem is starting to open up slightly, driven by EU regulations and developer efforts. While Google is helping enable features like AirDrop alternatives for Android, independent developers are also breaking barriers around Apple AirPods compatibility.
One example is LibrePods, which brings advanced AirPods features – like battery status, ANC control and wear detection – to Android devices. Previously, it required sideloading and root access, but recent Android updates have removed those limitations.
Thanks to fixes in Android 16 QPR3 and newer versions, the app now works without root on supported devices (such as Pixel and some OPPO/OnePlus models), with broader support expected as more devices update. LibrePods is also now available on the Google Play Store, making it easier and safer to install.
