Google announced a major overhaul of Search at I/O 2026, introducing a new AI-powered search experience built around the Gemini 3.5 Flash model. The redesigned search box now supports text, images, videos, files and even Chrome tabs as inputs, while also offering smarter AI-generated suggestions and conversational follow-up questions.
Google says AI Mode already has over one billion monthly users, and the upgraded search experience is rolling out globally across desktop and mobile devices.
Later this summer, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers will also gain access to background AI search agents that can continuously monitor tasks like apartment hunting and send updates automatically. Google is also expanding AI-powered booking features in the US, including the ability to contact businesses on a user’s behalf for services like home repair or beauty appointments.
In addition, Google’s Personal Intelligence features are expanding to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages, allowing users to connect services like Gmail, Google Photos and soon Google Calendar to AI Mode without requiring a subscription.
