Verizon is offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of people responsible for vandalizing or stealing its network infrastructure.
The move follows several recent incidents, including fiber cable cuts that caused widespread mobile and internet outages across parts of Southern California and Los Angeles. Verizon says such attacks can disrupt critical services, including healthcare, emergency communications and 911 systems.
Recent data shows that California and Texas account for more than half of reported network vandalism and theft incidents. California alone recorded 6,297 cases last year, causing an estimated $252.6 million in losses.
Verizon says anyone witnessing network vandalism should first call 911 and then contact the company’s security department. If the information leads to an arrest and conviction, the informant could receive the $25,000 reward.
