Google is opening Android further to third-party app stores starting July 22

Google is opening Android further to third-party app stores starting July 22, following the conclusion of a long-running legal battle with Epic Games. The company will allow third-party US Android stores to list and distribute apps from Google Play under the same terms.

The change comes after Google dropped its legal challenge against a court order requiring greater app store competition. Third-party stores will need to meet security requirements and pay a $5,000 annual access fee to offer Play Store apps, with the new rules initially applying only in the US.
