Apple reportedly spent over $1.2 million in one year to hire off-duty police officers for security at three of its San Francisco stores, using a private contractor.
The practice is part of the city’s “10B” program, which allows companies to pay for police presence at standard city rates. Other tech firms, including Airbnb and Salesforce, also use the program.
While common across the U.S., the approach is controversial – critics raise concerns about conflicts of interest and officer fatigue, while supporters argue it increases police presence without costing taxpayers.
